recognise why some consultations now feel disproportionately draining
communicate uncertainty without sounding uncertain
build confidence instead of repeatedly offering reassurance
hold boundaries without becoming detached
understand why trust is earned differently than it was ten years ago
recognise which consultation assumptions no longer serve you
Over the last few years I’ve noticed something I couldn’t quite explain.
Experienced clinicians weren’t suddenly becoming worse at consulting but many of us leave consultations thinking: “I genuinely don’t know what else I could have done there.”
This short video explains why I think that is, why I ended up renaming the workshop and why I believe a different approach is needed.
This isn't another communication skills course.
It isn't about consultation structure.
It isn't about difficult patients.
It isn't about learning new phrases.
It's about recognising that the consultation itself has changed, and adapting your consulting accordingly.
This framework has emerged from thousands of consultations, years of teaching clinicians and months of trying to answer one question:
Why do experienced clinicians increasingly leave consultations feeling they've done everything right, yet still feel they've somehow fallen short?
